No Limits Outdoor Adventure – Lake Oconee

During late May, June and July the NMML hosts 3 day retreats (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) for Miracle League families and 3 day camp sessions (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday) for campers from the City of Refuge Children’s Shelter, our inner City Strategic Partner.

The program is known as the No Limits Outdoor Challenge.  We lease a beautiful 27 acre camp facility (Camp Collinswood) on the shores of Lake Oconee.  The sessions for Miracle League families include the disabled child, the able bodied siblings and the parents, 10 families per session. Volunteer Camp Directors help keep things fun and safe, but it is up to the families to plan and shop for meals, do the cooking and the cleanup and generally keep things ship shape.  This may sound like “chores”, but working as a team there is lots of great social interaction and friendships form that last long after the families head for home.

The camp experience for City of Refuge children includes 30 campers per session.  For many of these children it is their first time out of the city.  The camp volunteers help facilitate the activities, keeping things fun and exciting; but they also make sure the campers fully experience and learn about their beautiful natural surroundings. Part of the “Nature Experience” includes a “Bear Intrusion” that seems to happen about the same time every Monday evening.  Funny how that happens?

Swimming, paddle boarding and tubing behind the boat are part of the on/in water adventure. Special Heads Up / Face Up life jackets make it possible to take almost everybody into the water, including children profoundly impacted by their disability.  For most of our Miracle League and City of Refuge campers, open water is a new experience and that’s part of the “challenge”. It’s a confidence building exercise, and once the challenge has been met campers take great pride in their accomplishment and can’t wait to get back to school and have something to share during the traditional “What I Did This Laster” session.
